To Group or Not to Group, That seems to be the question. Part 1

In my last post I directed you to read a post at the Staying Alive blog. The post was about the importance of the Clan or a Group for survival. This is a hot topic all over the net so do some research if you are interested in finding out more information. There's plenty out there. Some were a little concerned that a group may NOT be for them, that's fine, do what makes you feel secure.

I think people have a lot of different ideas about what a group is or should be. Not saying that any of your ideas are wrong but I am going to give you a description of what my ideal group would be and it's purpose.

First and foremost we all know that there is strength in numbers, in bad situations that is even more relevant. Together we can pool our resources, our talents, our strengths. The more eyes and ears that are on call the more secure you and your group will be. It takes at least 3 people just to be able to provide some security, one on watch, one on work and one on rest. Any less than that and you have stretched yourself too thin. (Again, my opinion) Even the lone wolf finds security and strength within the pack. To survive and to THRIVE is what I am most interested in, not just to be alive but to LIVE.

Then who is in this group may be your next question. Well, that's up to you. I would choose family first, friends second and others that you meet along the way as last. Skills are very important to your survival. Does any of your family members even know how to handle a gun? That is a skill that must be taught to any and all that you consider as part of your group. Do any know how to raise and preserve food, gotta have that skill too if you are going to thrive. Can you get along with these people? Probably not, at times. Stress will cause many to have their differences but you can and should all be willing to work past these. Do any of your family members, or potential group members, have any food, ammo or weapons that they can bring to your group? These are crucial to your survival and theirs.

I would like to have a group of no more than 10 armed and skilled adults, no less than 6. By Military standards the ratio of 3 to 1 is excepted in a tactical raid mission. 3 good guys to 1 bad guy and that is trial and error, you can bet on that. There are no 1 man missions in the military, even the lone sniper (as he is often though to be) is never alone. He has his spotter to assist him at all times. Watching for the mark, checking and re checking distance, wind direction, obstacles and guarding the "lone" sniper while he performs his task. I use the military standard because hey, these folks are pretty good at killing people and have trained well for it. I trust their judgement on tactical training probably 90% of the time. I'm not saying that you must form an army or even have members of the military, active of non active, in your group. There is no need to re invent the wheel here, what they do works, imitate it and practice it and you will see similar success.

The above only concentrates on your security, your ability to stay alive and protect yourself and your family with a group. Part 2 will consider the added benefits of having others to help with all the other tasks that go along with Long Term Survival. Stay tuned...

This concludes Part 1

Your comments, for or against groups, are always welcome. I look forward to hearing from you. I hope we can learn together as to what is right and what is not in forming survival groups. I for one am 100% pro group.

Meet Up and the Garden

The Prepper Meet Up went well yesterday, would have liked to have had more preppers there but still it was fun. Matt done a great job of leading the meet up, keeping control of the meeting and also allowing plenty of discussion at the same time. Much harder to do than it sounds. Great job Matt !! We had about 5 or 6 preppers there that really seemed to know what was going and had some great ideas about how to prepare. It was good to meet them and share ideas. I look forward to having more of the Prepper Meet Ups all around the state of Kentucky and around the country. If you're a prepper try to get one planned, you'll be glad you did.

In garden news, things are going ok, JUST ok that is. Rabbits have pretty much destroyed the green beans so far. I planted some more today and will be keeping a close eye on the rabbits too ( 22 rifle in hand ). Potato bugs have been hell on the taters but they are still just ok. Corn has had just too much rain to really do well this year. Some hot DRY days will do it good. Tomatoes and cucumbers are doing great, lots of growth and bloom in the last few days. All in all it's been a hard year on my garden, too much rain and not enough sunny days. But there will be a harvest of plenty of goodies.

Just goes to show how easy it is NOT to have food. If this were our only food supply we would be screwed....Big Time !! Thank goodness for our food storage and the ability to still get food at the stores. Not sure how much longer our money will be of any value though, just have to hope the crash holds off just a little longer. It's coming soon and I know it.

Been crazy busy for the last few weeks, putting up hay and all the good stuff that goes along with that kind of farm work. Always a thousand things to be done this time of year. The yard work, general cleaning and life itself takes up a hell of a lot of time. Now that the first cutting of hay is up things should settle down a bit, or at least I hope so. Had very little time to blog or read blogs ( I'm a much better reader than writer too ).

Been trying to keep up with the news as best I can, not seen any good news in all of it either. Better tighten the bootlaces folks things aren't looking good for free Americans. The PTB just can't take the fact that some of us still believe in Freedom and are willing to fight for it. We are just a Revolution away from Freedom, get ready, the horn may sound at any time now for Free men and women to stand against evil once again. The battle of good versus evil has been going on for ages and that battle is still alive and well today. Get to know your neighbors and form your survival groups as soon as you can. Tomorrow may be too late, do it now. Remember, there is strength in numbers. Get Ready and Stay Safe.

Survival Groups

When is comes to Long Term Survival we may all dream of the Lone Wolf fantasy were a man or woman with a rifle and a survival knife live all by themselves surviving and thriving in our new found life. But, as much as we like to think this is the way of survival, it's not reality. Only in a group will we be able to survive the long term effects of the future. One person can not make it near as well as a group. Alone, a person will never be able to rest, eat or work without someone else keeping guard over him. Vandals and bandits will roam the land looking for the Lone Wolf as he will be an easy target. He will have to sleep sometime and with no one to watch his back he is sure to perish in a matter of time. With a Survival Group there is safety in numbers. There will be someone to man the lookout post while others perform the required duties of Long Term Survival. Among these duties may be, tending the garden planted with heirloom seeds for use in future gardens, taking care of animals that you may be keeping for milk, meat or eggs, cutting and stacking firewood for heat or for cooking, performing maintenance on you alternative power source be it solar, hydro, or wind power. Looking out for would be looters and guarding what you have will be a full time job for several people.

If you can at all, I suggest that you start forming your groups as soon as possible. Check to see if you have neighbors that are like minded and most importantly have skills. Your group will need to consist of people with a variety of skills. Are any of your neighbors in the medical field? That is for sure one skill that you will want to have around. Carpenters, mechanics, those who know how to raise and care for livestock and of course, shooters. Everyone in the group will need to have shooting skills and tactical skills as well. Having someone that can teach these skills is a must too.

Life as we know it will change forever, like it or not. The members of your group need to be people you can trust with your life because that's what you will be doing for each, watching each others backs. Group members that are prepping now are by far the best choice. Meet with these group members regularly to discuss what options you have and be honest about them all. Don't tell me you can shoot and then let me find out after SHTF that you don't know one end of a rifle from the other. Practice with your group and get a feel for what others can and can't do. Train now rather than later although on going training will be a must for all.

Make a list of skills that the group has and see what is lacking, then look for others that may fill this void. If we are to survive and thrive in the new world that we will be living in we must pull together and form groups or tribes if you will. Michael over at Staying Alive has a good post today were he is talking about people re-tribing. Children moving back in with their parents to help secure the homestead and the family. Extra hands to work and eyes to watch out for would be looters. Be sure to give it a read, it's good stuff. I like the idea.

This is a topic that one could spend weeks studying about and come up with a million different ways to form your group. I encourage you to comment and voice your ideas on this subject. There is a lot that can be covered on this subject and I hope you will join in on the discussion. Most of all I hope that you will start forming your own group.
