We are energy hogs!!!!!!!
Man oh man, got the damn electric bill today. The wife is still on holiday so I got the mail and looked through it today. This is something that I never do, I find my magazines and that's about it for me. I noticed the electric bill and thought I would take a look, let me first say that she is the one that pays all the bills and all that shit. I never write a check for anything, so I'm not sure how much any of that stuff comes to. I just try to make sure there is enough money in the account to take care of all of our needs. I mentioned in a comment on my last post that I thought we may use 10 or 15 kw per day, having no idea of the real amount. Well you can imagine my surprise when I seen that last months average was 50kw per day. Yes you read that right.....50...a friggin day!! I had no idea what hogs we where. I am looking around the room right now and I can see why. We usually have 2 or 3 Tv's on at the same damn time, the wife has a shit load of those little christmas light looking things wrapped around everything in sight, dvd player's plug in, Direct TV boxes everywhere you look, everyone sleeping with a fan on during the night and the list goes on and on and on. This place is suckin the friggin life outa me. I may just turn off about half the breakers in the breaker box before she comes home tomorrow. LOL...it would be like the end of the world, talk about the shit hittin the fan. All of this has had me thinking even more about getting off grid, this has got to stop. It's nonsense, it's stupid....and it's gonna change if it kills everybody in the damn place. No wonder there is never enough money, we're sticking it all back in those damn wall outlets.

Modern homes/appliances/lifestyles don't make it easy to conserve electricity, and it's not cheap to change while still maintaining some semblence of modern living. On top of the cost of our alternative power solution, we spent about another 5k to replace all our major appliances (smaller frig, front load washer, propane freezer, propane kitchen stove, woodstove, etc). Find a way to get the wife on board, if your house is run like mine they use a lot of electricity taking care of it (and us). Mine's a trooper - gave up most of the daily (kilowatt!) hairdo ritual, hand washes dishes, 19th century kitchen appliances - but she wasn't going to voluntarily give up her refrigerator and clothes washer :-)
I'm off to refill the wood crib and change the oil in the genny before a winter storm hits later. Take care and happy Sunday to ya.
tootrack, our lifestyle needs an overhaul for sure. We, like most, have lived very comfortably in this monster of a home. I just wish things could be simple. People lived good lives for generations with out the dependency on electricty. I have no desire to go back to the old way but I know we can learn a lot from that way of life. We don't really need all this stuff, we have just got used to it. Getting the wife onboard is my biggest challange. We need a change or atleast I do. Thanks for the comments.

As fer energy use, it's hard to beat the twelve volt system for lighting in my POS trailer. It's the little space heaters that kill me. No kidding, my electrical bill for September was twenty bucks.
busted, 20 bucks for electricty, maybe I should sent my family to take some lesons from you man That's great. I doubt if your home is really a POS. haha!! A true POS is one that's so damn big you can't heat or cool without breaking the bank. If it's affordable it's a good home. Thanks for making me an Onery Bastard !! My parents will be so proud. lol
I'm in the same boat Bullseye... Electricity bill runs $200-$300. Outrageous! About the same as you, 53 KWH per day...... We've cut our use to the "bare minimum" (as defined by the dear wife). Ditched the 2nd fridge, the stand up freezer (can't afford to fill 'em anyways!), run my air compressor very little, upped the thermostst from 74 to 80 (76 at night) in summer, 72 in winter.......
Mayberry, we have a woodstove insert that takes care of most of the heating, thermostat is set at 67 at all times during the winter and hardly ever comes on. 75 during the summer. It's all these little strings of lights that suck us/me dry. Oh, but they are so pretty...yea right.
